"Phoenix based metal band Lurid State has recently released their follow up album to their Setting Sun EP and the progressive step forward they took is astoundingly satisfying. The new album entitled Dissenter shows a band that has more drive and focus under their belt and has definitely used their time between albums wisely to learn and grow their sound. As I was listening to Dissenter numerous times, I was trying to compare their music to another band I have heard and I could not immediately place another band that sounded like them. This is actually a good sign because Lurid State has their own distinct sound and is not trying to replicate one of their influences. While listening to their album in my car at volume levels no doctor would approve, I finally realized how to describe Dissenter. The metal crunch experienced by my senses could only be labeled as the carefully controlled and well thought out aggression of a schizophrenic.
I will admit I am not a big fan of slow buildups in most music unless you are progressive like Opeth, but the way that Dissenter was written and arranged I completely understand the concept. There are peaks and valleys throughout the entire album that get your emotions going from an intense calm before ramping up to split your sinuses with meticulous heaviness. The way Lurid State makes their music seamlessly flow from fast to soft and back to extreme is done so artistically that the tempo changes are barely noticeable. I was too busy letting the music involuntarily control my limbs from mimicking drumming to playing guitar. The drumming is technically concentrated but simultaneously infused with a forceful elegance. The raw emotion and brutish vocals resonate in your cranium with such a commanding presence that resisting empathy for his aggressive anguish is impossible. Another impressive and equally important piece of the band is their excellent guitar work. The rhythm is straight forward enough to be catchy but not overbearing. The guitar solos are intricate and surprisingly nonchalantly placed in their songs almost as if it was an afterthought. There is not one main instrumental focus of Lurid State and the entire band as a whole comes together to concoct a truly catchy and brutally abrasive noise that infects your soul. Every musician has that one album that made them want to learn an instrument and start a band. Lurid State’s new album Dissenter is the catalyst some unknowing kid is just waiting to hear ready to strike him in the skull like lightening from Zeus himself."
